Mutina, an Italian company, goes beyond tile manufacturing. Known for their innovative design approach, Mutina consistently astounds the industry with audacious design ideas that incorporate distinct 3D elements and tiles that exude captivating textures and patterns. These remarkable designs stem from enduring partnerships with a diverse range of artists, designers, and architects on an international scale. The outcomes of these collaborations manifest in the company's versatile interior applications as well as their structural implementations.
Brac, an exclusively designed terracotta ceramic piece by Nathalie Du Pasquier, serves as a versatile three-dimensional component for constructing various structures and walls, giving rise to captivating interplays of light and shadow. The bricks that define this collection are authentic design elements crafted from extruded terracotta. The Brac collection offers a selection of five colours: clay, featuring a natural matte surface, and bianco, salvia, marrone, and nero, boasting a glossy enamel finish. Each individual Brac piece measures 13 x 22 x 10cm in size.
In collaboration between Mutina and Patricia Urquiola, there was a shared intention to evoke the traditional craftsmanship associated with terracotta production. Seeking to transcend the limitations of standard two-dimensional wall cladding, they embarked on an exploration of three-dimensional bricks and novel design elements. The design of the Celosia divider draws inspiration from the Roman numeral system, resulting in a dynamic structure characterised by distinctive partitions. Each piece is 20.5 x 26.5 x 10 cm.
Designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, Mistral draws inspiration from the architectural components found in ancient structures. While exploring the Italian countryside, they observed the utilisation of terracotta vent tiles in rural barns and outbuildings to facilitate natural ventilation. Intrigued by their functional role, the duo embarked on a creative journey, envisioning and contemplating the interplay of light and shadow within the sturdy stone walls of an old farmhouse. This contemplation served as the catalyst for the creation of Mistral. Handcrafted cast terracotta pieces 12.5 cm thick, suitable for residential and commercial areas and in maximum surfaces of 2 m x 3 m or 3 m x 2 m.
Few building materials are as fundamental to the construction of architectural and decorative structures as the humble brick. The French designers and brothers Ronan and Ewan Bouroullec took on the task of reimagining this essential element for Mutina, resulting in the creation of Bloc. This collection features cuboid-shaped bricks measuring 13cm by 13cm by 10cm, distinguished by four holes. Bloc is available in natural terracotta, as well as in Pearl, Blue, Red, and Grey, offering a choice between matte and glossy finishes. The unique aspect of Bloc lies in its versatile design, as the holes within the bricks can be filled with the wooden Tube in red and blue, allowing for the creation of intricate patterns and a myriad of color combinations.
The hexagon, a shape synonymous with honeycombs, is a remarkable creation of nature that possesses both geometric and technical qualities. German designer Konstantin Grcic drew inspiration from this extraordinary characteristic when developing the Hives 3D element for Mutina. This terracotta brick, composed of two interconnected hexagons, embodies the essence of its materiality, exhibiting organic color, texture, and inherent properties. The unique shape of the brick offers numerous opportunities for imaginative manipulation. Measuring 13cm by 22.5cm by 7.5cm, the brick can be arranged vertically or horizontally in stacked or staggered configurations, enabling the creation of dividing walls, curved pillars, and integration into various structures and furniture. Hives is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, as long as it is placed under shelter.
Following the success of the acclaimed Celosia, Patricia Urquiola presents her newest 3D element for Mutina called Jali. This decorative module, crafted from extruded terracotta, pays homage to the perforated bricks commonly found in Indian architecture. These bricks are traditionally used for parapets or partition walls, offering shade while allowing the passage of light and breeze. Jali provides versatile placement options, whether vertically or horizontally, in aligned or staggered arrangements. It serves multiple purposes, functioning as partitions or even furniture. Each brick measures 11.7cm by 23.4cm and is available in a natural finish, as well as glazed in black or white.
The collection showcases a singular terracotta element presented in a 15x25x15 cm format. Drawing inspiration from masonry, a key aspect of Van Duysen's artistic vision, Renga exhibits a distinct architectural design. It takes the form of a vertical parallelepiped with a square base, enhanced by the addition of four cylinders that envelop the corners, resulting in a softer overall aesthetic. Renga is created through the casting technique, employing a mixture of coloured liquid stoneware. This process yields a highly tactile and matte surface, ensuring that each piece possesses a unique character with subtly varying shades. The collection is available in three captivating hues: Ivory, Brown, and Grey.
